Blog #4 Malta

IMG_20151103_135558And here it is, my last blogpost of my internship at Cleland & Souchet in Malta…

In the month december, we did less marketing related activities. But we did some.

Norbert was responsible for creating the Hamper brochure. In this brochure is standing all the hampers that are being sold, with info, the photo’s of the hampers and a list of the content in the hamper. The photo’s were made last month. We helped Norbert with making the brochure in photoshop. The brochure was being printed, and given to the clients. There was a lot of pressure here, because everything had to be finished before the deadline..

As the brochure was finished, and the first orders of the hampers were being placed, we helped a hand with setting up the place for the production of the hampers. It was located in the garage below the office of Cleland & Souchet, in the city San Gwann. We drove to the house of the boss Richard, to get all the shelves, and placed them in the garage. All of the food, the wine, and the boxes for the hampers was placed at the entry of the garage. In the back of the garage, the desk of Jean was being placed. His computer was standing here, and he managed everything with the orders of the hampers, as well with the sending.

Then we met Doris. Doris is responsible for the making of the hampers. She is in charge of +- 10 ladies, who were making the hampers. A lot of these women also helped other years with the making of the hampers. Doris is a nice person, Although a lot of people are saying that she can get very stressed..

Around 5000 hampers are being sold each year. And for that 5000 hampers, you need 5000 boxes. Guess who’ll make these boxes this year… The first days we did. It was not difficult to do. Funny enough every box contained an instruction manual with pictures, just like stuff from IKEA.

After a while we met the drivers. Around 10 guys who are driving the hampers to the homes and companies who ordered it, or got it as a gift. We were told there are drivers and runners. The drivers try to get the car to the right direction. The runners job is to deliver the hamper to the address as fast as possible.

Justin and I helped with the making of the hampers. Also, we helped a lot with the deliveries of the hampers (as a runner). When we were in the garage, we didn’t just work on making hampers. We also helped with getting all the hampers from the shelves to the big table in the middle of the room, so the drivers and runners could get it as fast as possible. The Hampers that were finished were placed on the shelves by code. We helped with organising everything on the shelves.

We were making long days this month. 2 weeks, we also worked on the weekend. We did get payed for this. Also, if we worked after 5 on a weekday, we also got payed. From the money we earned Justin and I got ourselves 2 luxury meals for christmas. Even after christmas there were still some hampers being sold and delivered. This was less intense though. Over the last days we helped with the last deliveries, and bringing the shelves back to the house of Richard. Then we got the last couple of days off, so we went to see the last things we hàd to see from Malta. On the last day, we had a lunch at a sushibar with the staff of Cleland& Souchet. This was our leaving party. Richard, Jean and his wife were here, aswel Gabby, Deborah and her husband, Kenny and his wife.

En then, the next day, our plane left. We got a free lovely breakfast at the Cleland & Souchet cafe in the airport (We’ve never been here since it is located behind the check-in area) and had a good flight. Temperature in Malta on the day we left: 20 °C. Holland: 5 °C. I’m going to miss Malta for sure, although it’s nice to finally lay in my own bed, and see my family and friends again. We have one week off, then we start with school again..

Blog #3 Malta

This post is about the third month, November, of my internship at Cleland & Souchet in Malta.

The past month we where busy with creating the database. This month, we finished it. We added the last couple of email addresses, and with the help of Richard, Fixed a couple of things that were wrong. Also sent Richard us a LOT of emails (+-30) with huge amounts of Email-Addresses. We are adding  them in one spreadsheet file.

Also, the photos of the new hamper collection 2015/2016 were being made. Norbert, a new marketing colleague who is working a lot on the new hamper collection, editing photo’s, and other stuff. We were asked to help with creating the hamper photos. First, Norbert made a stand with a white sheet behind it. It was not very steady, so we had to be really careful. We helped with placing the extra lighting in a way, that almost no shadows were shown. This was taking a lot of time, but after +- 2 ours, it was finally ready. Every hamper was very carefully organised, Richard and Fabricia helped with this work. Since there are 11 different hampers, This was taking the whole day. When it was 6 o’clock, we were allowed to go home, but Norbert, Richard and Fabricia were working on this until late in the night.  The following days, Norbert was editing the photos. We couldn’t help with this, because we don’t have the right programs to do this (He works a lot with photoshop.

The website was going online in the beginning of this month. It was taking a day to operate well, but now it works good. It was being done by Adrian. The new hamper collection had to be on the new website too. Richard asked us if we could do it, but due to an error in the website creator, it didn’t work. Richard called  Adrian, and he had to do it.

This month we also helped in the wine storage again. We helped with putting stickers on the boxes. Some of these boxes were driven to the C&S cafe in Portomaso, and we could help with this.

The wines we are now stickering are going into the hampers. Around 5000 hampers are being sold every year. This is a lot of work. The following month, we are also supposed to help with this a lot.

The second month, October. – Blog #2 Malta

The second month, October. – Blog #2 Malta

October was the second month in Malta for Justin and I. The weather is a little chiller, which is nice.

This month we worked a lot at the “Trip to Spain” campaign. At the beginning of this month, we had a short meeting with Richard about the campaign. He told us information, and text he wanted on the website. Justin and I created a special page on the new Cleland & Souchet website. We learned how to do this at the meeting of the website creator, Adrian. At the page, we wrote all the information about the campaign.

We also made a flyer about the campaign.

The company wants the new website to go live as soon as possible. We are helping a little with the making of the website. For example, we updated the wine list. The website contains a database of all the wines, hampers and luxury products the company sells. However, the list is not complete yet. Some wines don’t have the right vintage, while other wines aren’t even on the website yet. We helped with adding these wines.

This month we were more often asked to help Chris and Kenny, the 2 employees working on the distribution of the wines, with things to do in the shop. It includes opening boxes with bottles of wines, give all the wines a sticker, and close the box again. This work is not really challenging, but it can be nice for a little variation.

We discussed with Richard about if we can work at the Portomaso shop/cafe as a waiter. Maybe that is going to happen next month.

Also, Justin and I are going to work on a promotional video for the company. We are still thinking on what we are going to do.

Besides the work, this month our parents came by, and a friend of mine. Hereby, we got a little more time of. The month December is going to be stressful, hardworking month (we have been warned for this A LOT of times by our colleagues), so a little time of is nice in this month 🙂

The first month in Malta! – Blog #1 Malta

This post is going to be about the first month of the internship in Malta.
After a month being here on the island Malta, it still feels like a long holiday. This is because the company is very nice, the many holidays they have in the country (some say it has the most holidays in the world), and the nice weather of course!

We know our colleagues a little better now. The most contact we have is with Richard, our boss. He is a sweet, patient, -sometimes a little chaotic man. He is the one giving us new projects, and helping us with our current projects.

In the first week, we worked on our first project; the investigation of different rival cafes of the future Cleland & Souchet Cafe in Valletta. After the first week, we did more research about the top rivals of the company. We collected as much information as possible.

We also did the same kind of project in another city: St Julians. This is the city where another cafe of the company is about to open. Since there are not so many real rivals in this area, we wrote as much as possible about a couple of cafe’s. The biggest rival is right across the street of the new Cleland & Souchet cafe, so this is going to be a real challenge.


We also have a new project. The company has a huge database with companies. The companies are clients of Cleland & Souchet, who bought “hampers” at the company. Hampers are the gift boxes the company creates during christmas time.

The database also got a tab with all the companies in malta, in the categories Gaming, banks, investment companies, law firms, management consultants and insurance companies. The database is not correct, and it really is a HUGE mess. A lot of contact details are not correct, and there are a lot of companies that still have to be added. Our task is to make the database up to date. Before christmas, we help with sending emails to the companies, promoting the hampers.


Once this month we had a moment we had not so much to do, and Gabby and Deborah asked to us if we had time to do some administrative work. We had to order a lot of bills on alphabetical order. A job which was not so fun, but it had to be done 🙂 On another day we also helped with carrying boxes in the shop, and adding new products in the showcase.

Richard told us about the new website, and we are helping to create the website. We had a meeting with Adrian. He is the website creator. Before the first meeting we saw the website. We directly added some feedback, for example; the Facebook like button was located all at the bottom of the page, we thought it was better to add it on the top. This, and a couple of other things we told him, and he changed it the next day already.

At the meeting, he explained to us how the editor of the website works. Now we can add information to the website, and edit stuff. Also, He told us a lot about SEO; Search Engine Optimisation. He explained how it is possible to give the website a lot higher place in Google, With some very easy tricks. We learned a lot at this meeting.

Our most fun project we are going to work on the next month: setting up a marketing campaign!
The company is allowed to give away a luxe trip to spain; including wine tasting and a 2 night stay in a top hotel. The price can be won by buying a specific wine at the Cleland & Souchet shop. We are going to create the whole campaign.

Also, we have to create more campaigns to promote the new website, and get more likes on Facebook.


This month, I learned a lot of new stuff.
  • I learned to write a professional report. After handing over our report to Richard, he had a couple of useful tricks. For example: We didn’t write an summery at the beginning of the report. Richard went to America in the past, and he told us that every good report starts with the summery.
  • I’ve become better in working in spreadsheets. The database is written in an spreadsheet, and I learned a lot new things since we work in it a lot.
  • I’ve learned a lot about creating websites, and SEO.

Things I found difficult this month
  • I found it difficult to write a useful review of other cafes. At the meeting where we discussed our report, we found a lot of mistakes we made. For example: we thought to easy about it. We could have added a lot more information.
  • Sometimes I found it difficult to explain a question in English in a meeting with Richard.

I am very excited about the next months!

Blog Malta week 1

This is the first week of my internship at Cleland & Souchet. We are now two weeks on Malta already. The past week we were here on holiday. We enjoyed the beach, the nice people and the weather a lot. The apartment we stayed in did we found on airbnb. It is a nice apartment, only too expensive. This is why we had too search for another apartment in the first week. We already found it.  It’s located in a cheap neighbourhood, 20 minutes away from the internship by bus.
We had an appointment with Richard at 10 o’clock. When we arrived, Richard told us to get our laptops from the apartment. We did, and came back to the Cleland & Souchet shop at half past 10. He drove us with his car to San Gwann, where the office is located. He introduced us to our colleagues. After that, he told us the basics about the company. He told us that Cleland & Souchet exists out of different parts. There is the wine part, where the company imports different kind of wines out of 18 countries all over te world to Malta, and sells them to Cafes, Restaurants and hotels. This is the biggest part of the company.
The company also has a shop with luxury goods. The newest project of the company is to start luxury cafes. In the cafes they sell food, drinks, and also a lot of luxory  wines. They already have 2 cafes, and they want to expand soon.

Our Job for the first week is to localise different Cafes/ Winecafes/ bars in the capital Valetta, and arrange them. In the first day, we already worked on that. Justin and I created a Google Maps, and located the best cafes in Valetta. On various websites we found information about the cafes. An example is trip advisor. The third day, we went to the capital Valletta itself. We got a little budget from Richard, and we had to search for cafes that where not active on internet.

The day after, we went to Valletta again. We again found a lot of cafes, and found a lot of new information about them.

On friday, we finished our project. We added an table with the best and nearest cafes in Valletta. We wrote a lot about every cafe. We gave the project to Richard, and he was very happy about it. He said it was excellent work, and he was thinking about presenting our project to the owners of the company.
